TRUSTED LEADERSHIP FOR CHANGE
Hello, my name is Janice Jones, and I am a candidate for the 3rd District Police Council. When I first heard about the police council, I thought it was a great way to better serve my community. The more I delve into the functions, the more I saw an opportunity to change a system historically rooted in racism to one filled with greater public safety, accountability, and equity. I thought how great this could be for Black communities, and I felt it would be an excellent way for Blacks and other minorities to have a true VOICE in the system that serves and protect us. To this end, I became a candidate for the 3rd District Police Council.
"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members, a heart of grace and a soul generated by love."
Coretta Scott King
I am a servant of God. A product of the Chicago Public School System. I have been a South Shore Community resident for practically my whole life. I love my community and dedicated a great deal of my life to serving my community with a passion for youth, seniors, families and an unwavering commitment to inspiring community stewardship & collaborations.
As Community resident I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly in my community.
I have always wanted to do more to make my community safer, where families could live, grow and become productive citizens. I have worked to solve many issues troubling my community. I started the first block club on my block and helped other blocks to form their clubs. I am known as the CEO of Block clubs and the block club lady. I am the facilitator for Beat 334, completed the Citizen Academy
training, an active participant in the "Together We Can Initiative“ and very instrumental in planning Community Care days, Bike Rodeo & Slow Roll events across the district. These activities allow neighbors and community stakeholders to connect, build close nit and trusting relationships.
I am a Community Trendsetter with the goal of changing the trend of violence in my community into safer communities for ALL. While I believe no single approach is right for everyone or every community. I understand Community Equity requires tailor-made solutions and trusted relationships. A brighter future for those who work and live in the neighborhood can be created when we work together. I work diligently, with: civic and community organizations, schools, youth and community stakeholders to give families a fighting chance at reaching their fullest potential. I believe my education and experience in social justice, violence prevention, advocacy, mediation and community outreach, positions me for success as a District Council member.

In July 2021, the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance creating a new model for police oversight, accountability, and public safety. The ordinance creates two bodies: a citywide Community Commission
for Public Safety and Accountability, with power to advance systemic reform, and District Councils, which will be elected in each police district and work to improve policing and public safety in the district. The Commission and District Councils will bring police officers and Chicago residents together to plan, prioritize, and build mutual trust; strengthen the police accountability system; give Chicagoans a meaningful new role in oversight; and explore and advance alternative effective approaches to public safety.
